DandyLion

The Creative Brief

This brand video was made to reflect the heart of DandyLion: intentional design, heirloom-level craftsmanship and the beauty of things made by hand. We focused on creating visuals that felt warm, honest, and simple, letting the framing and camera movement echo the brand’s values rather than distract from them.

We spent time inside DandyLion’s full world - from the welcoming storefront in Hinesburg, to the collaborative woodworking at The Treehouse, and into the studio, where a handful of beloved products were highlighted. Along the way, we captured the real sounds of the process: sewing machines humming, wood being shaped, fabric moving through hands - small details that ground the film in touch and texture.

The finished piece is an intimate look at the people, materials, and processes behind DandyLion. A portrait of thoughtful design and well-made objects, created to be lived with, used daily, and loved for years to come.

Photon Theory

DandyLion Shop

At the shop, all lighting was placed outside the storefront windows to preserve a clean, uninterrupted interior frame. We used an Aputure 1200x, 1200d, and 600x to create a strong, directional backlight, allowing the ambient bounce within the space to naturally fill in the shadows. This approach gave us contrast without over-lighting and maintained a soft, lived-in feel. For tighter coverage, we introduced a 4x4 black floppy to shape and deepen contrast, or a small bounce to subtly lift exposure on faces when needed. Keeping all fixtures outside the windows allowed us to shoot wide without compromising composition, and enabled smooth, expansive dolly moves that showcased the full space.

TreeHouse Hardwoods

At TreeHouse Hardwoods, we intentionally mixed color temperatures to create separation, depth, and visual contrast within the larger environment. The key light was a Godox F600 Bi-Color LED pushed through a 6x6 T-bone of unbleached muslin for a warm, soft wrap. A cooler Aputure 1200x served as backlight to carve out the subject, while an Aputure 600x with a Fresnel was used to shape and control the background. Light atmospheric haze was added to introduce texture and dimensionality, enhancing light falloff and reinforcing the scale of the space.

Studio

In the studio, we built a controlled, soft key using a book-light setup with an Aputure 1200x, first bounced into a 4x4 muslin and then pushed back through a double break of two 6x6 T-bones—one full grid and one 1/4 grid—for a smooth, layered quality of light. A 600x through a 2x3 cucoloris added subtle breakup and movement to the background, while an Aputure 300x through an Aputure Light Box provided a clean, controlled hair light to separate the subject from the backdrop.
